Week 2 Inspiration

Idiom- "a group of words established to have meaning however outside of that culture maybe confusing to translate. It is usually a characteristic mode found in music or art. "- Cassandra
(ex) "only architects shape the space in which we live and through which we move."- Nikolaus Pevsner's page 55 of Understanding Architecture.

Illuminate- to shed light on a certain object in order to make that object stand out. Above is an illustration by me which was created in order to illuminate five personal items of my own. The items were picked because each one symbolises a different special meaning to me when I look at them: travels, new adventures, old past times, and sisterhood. I chose the color green to be Incorporated with my work because it is my favorite color. (ex) "Architecture is the crystallization of ideas... it is what nature cannot make."- Louis Kahn page 3 of Understanding Architecture

Material- "the substance or substances of which a thing is made or composed; can also be a group of ideas, facts, data, etc., that may provide the basis for or be incorporated into some integrated work"-http://dictionary.reference.com/

Commodity: Firmness: Delight
Commodity- "an article of trade or commerce; a product as distinguished from a service. Something of use, advantage, or value."- http://dictionary.reference.com/
(ex) "the reality of a room, for instance, was to be found in the vacant space enclosed by the roof and walls, not in the roof and walls them-selves. The usefulness of a water pitcher dwelt in the emptiness where the water might be put, not in the form of the pitcher or the material out of which it was made."-Okakura Kakuzo on page 55 of Understanding Archtecture. As I was reading the class material this quote really spoke out to me for the reason that all of last semesters work was to find a place and a space for something. In Interior Architecture finding that place and space is just as vital as designing the actual structure.
Firmness- "not soft or yielding when pressed; comparatively solid, hard, stiff, or rigid: firm ground; firm texture."- http://dictionary.reference.com/ (ex) In our history text, Understanding Architecture, one could find on page 25 a rather impressive quote by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe- "Architecture... is the crystallization of its inner structure, the slow unfolding of form. That is the reason why technology and architecture are so closely related." As a student of Interior Architecture I can really appreciate this quote because it is directly linking design with functionality.
Delight- the sense or feeling of pleasure or enjoyment. Or more simply put, "Life is not life at all without Delight."- as said by C.V.D. Patmore, The Victories of Love, 1863. Can also be found on page 67 of Understanding Architecture. My delight is being able to take classes which encurage critical thinking.
